#1 Penn St. visits Sooner ice

Their first game after the christmas break, the #8 Sooners hockey team hosted #1 Penn State Saturday afternoon. The match also featured Goaltender Nick Holmes return to the ice after transferring out of UCO to head to OU at the start of the season.

After two solid periods of hard-hitting hockey in what appeared to be two evenly matched teams, the Icers would pull ahead of the Sooners and take a 3-0 shutout win.

Penn St. played the previous night up the interstate at #17 UCO, walking out with a loss. The Bronchos handed it to them, 3-2 after a four round shoot out. The loss was Penn St.’s first back-to-back losses for the year, being beat by Newman University on Wednesday. Tommy Olczyk scored  the Icers two goals in the UCO loss, bringing his total to 16 for the year. If the last name sounds familiar, it should to Chicago Blackhawks fans. Tommy is the son of Eddie O….

With a 4 o’clock start time, neither team had any problem with their energy levels in the first period, which remained scoreless. Penn St. would strike in the second period, then would score twice more in third, the last on a power play.  OU would outshoot Penn St. by  22-19 but could not capitalize on their four power play chances.

The Sooners have now gone 175 minutes and 10 seconds of game play without scoring a goal. OU will hope to turn their offense around when they host #9 Illinois this weekend for a pair of games. Faceoff Friday is 7:30, Saturday at 4pm.
