The Sooners hosted North Dakota State this weekend, sweeping the Bison, and now prepare for their last two games of the regular season before heading to Cleveland, OH for the ACHA D1 National Championship tournament.
Friday night, OU would take the 3-1 win over NDSU, scoring one goal per period. Tenders Matt Pombo and Nick Holmes would share duties, Holmes coming in half way though the second period. Pombo would face 15 shots, Holmes 4. Steven Behm and Justin Giles would score in the first and second periods, Travis McKinney sealing the fate with an empty netter with 20 seconds left in the third.
Saturday’s game started out a bit shaky when NDSU’s Mitch Benson scored at 16:49 in the first period. The Sooners would regroup in the second period, scoring 3 goals. Newcomer David Starr would score twice, Matt Mckinney getting the third.
Augie Hoffmann would put one in the net early in the third, putting OU up 4-1. There the score would remain for OU, NDSU scoring shortly after. Saturday’s final would remain 4-2. Netminder Louis Libin got the start and the win in front of visiting friends and family from Calgary. He would shot 9 of 11 shots on goal. The Bisons netminder Trevor Tabaka would have an incredible performance, stopping all but 4 out of 44 shots on goal by the Sooners. In Fridays matchup, he faced 38 shots on goal.
The Oklahoma Sooners are now sitting on 23-12-2 record, in 9th place. The next and last set of games will be this weekend, facing in state rival University of Central Oklahoma. As usual, Friday nights game will be in Edmond, UCO’s home ice; Saturday afternoon in south OKC, the Sooners home ice. The matchup is the end of the regular season for both teams, who will both be attending the National Championship tournament.
