In two months, the University of Oklahoma hockey team will play their first game of the 2012-2013 season. Losing three seniors at the end of the 2011-2012 season, the Sooners will get a good look at six new commitments on the ice in August. Two of these commitments, Jordan Greenburg and Mico Solorzano, come from the NAHL Champion Texas Tornado team.
Jordan Greenberg (F) will begin his freshman year at OU sitting on a 13 goal, 48 assist season. He finished with a +22, his 61 points putting him second in standings on the Tornado team.
Mico Solorzano (D) comes in with a solid 6 goals and 15 assists in his last season with Texas.
The Sooners will have another set of brothers (Travis and Matt McKinney) on the team this season with Ryan Zehnder (F) joining his brother Kevin (D). Ryan is coming to OU after playing in St. Louis for the NAHL Bandits. He carried 5 goal and 7 assists last season.
From the KIJHL, OU has Jeff Coates coming in. Coates played three years with the Penticton Lakers and tallied up 13 goals and 13 assists in 2 of those 3 years.
“In his two seasons with the Lakers the speedy forward was a leader both on and off the ice and a much welcomed veteran presents on a young Lakers team. Oklahoma is getting an excellent hockey player and a quality young man and we wish Jeff “all the best” on the ice and in the classroom.” — Lakers
After losing goaltender Brad Roth to the NAHL Chicago Hitman last season, this year, the Sooners turn the tables and welcome a Hitman D-man, Mason Miller.
Mason finished the season with 2 goals and 7 assists. One of those goals would be a shorthanded game winner.
Miller started the season with the Topeka Roadrunners, where Corey Ramsey played the 2011-2012 season. No doubt the two have played together, both players being from Colleyville Texas as well. Ramsey finished his three years at Topeka with 12 goals and 38 assists. The Sooners are sure to welcome another solid defenseman.
September 21st is the home/season opener for the Sooners. They will face Arkansas, Division 3, both Friday night and Saturday afternoon. Oklahoma finished the 2010-2011 regular season ranked 7th and a 26-13-2 record. The Sooners ended their season with a controversial 6-3 loss to Penn State in the quarterfinals of the ACHA D1 National Championship Tournament.
7-18-12 Addendum: Two more commitments added to OU’s 12-13 class. Transfer junior Chad Liley (London, ON/Northland College NCAA D3) and incoming freshman Anthony Cullen (Flagstaff, AZ/Boulder Bison WSHL).
8-8-12 Four more commitments were announced for the Oklahoma Hockey squad: Brandon Dennis (Williamsport, MD/Franklin Pierce University NCAA D2), transfer sophomore Darrell Boldon (Calgary, AB/Adrian College ACHA D1), transfer freshman Stan Smrke (Tulsa, OK/Oswego State NCAA D3) and transfer junior Mark Jackson (Bixby, OK/Gustavus Adolphus College NCAA D3)
