Sooner Hockey Closes Home Opening Weekend Undefeated.

Goalie Colin Fernandes leads the Sooners to the ice.

The Sooners came into their opening weekend with a pre-season ranking of 6th in the ACHA Division I system. OU hosted the Arkansas Razorbacks (DIII) in Oklahoma City Friday and Saturday, taking both games with 10-2 wins. Despite going 0-2 on the power play Friday night, nine different Sooners would score a goal, Senior Chad Hudson scoring twice. Justin Giles, Kevin Zehnder, Elliott Polanchyck each had a goal and two assists. Steven Behm, Darrell Boldon, Jon Schanke, Shane Vorndran and Chad Liley all scored a goal in the win. The Sooners also kept the Razorbacks at bay, killing all 6 penalties effectively, in a hard hitting, fast paced game. Nick Holmes started in net for the home opener, stopping 12 of 13 shots on goal, in front of a packed house, estimated at 1,200.

While Saturday’s final score would match Friday’s 10-2 final, the overall outcome was a bit different. Newcomer Jordan Greenberg would make his presence known on the ice, scoring 4 goals in the game, three of those being shorthanded goals. Darrell Boldon would also end the night with his own hat-trick.  Colin Fernandes was in net for Saturday’s matchup, stopping 19 of 21 shots.

The heat on the ice matched up well with the heat outside the rink. For those that braved the 93 degree temps out in the parking lot, the Sooners made it worth the sweat.

OU hosts Texas A&M next weekend, Sept. 28th and 29th. It should be a bit cooler for tailgating. If you can’t make the games because you broke your neck, you can now watch online at OUTV.  For game pics, check out Puckchk Photos on facebook.
