A month. The whole month of October. The Blazers Ice Center in south Oklahoma City will not be blaring “Boomer Sooner” after a goal for a month.
OU will return to the BIC on Thursday, Nov 1st, hosting Rutgers University followed by Lindenwood U. on the 2nd and 3rd. Until then, well, we’ll just have to watch some OKC Barons hockey, who start their home season on Oct. 19th. The Barons will also have two exhibition games on Oct. 5th and 6th while the Sooners are in Springfield,IL for an ACHA tournament.
The Sooners will head north Thursday night with a new boost in the ACHA ranking, going from 6th to 4th. OU (4-0) will face an old nemesis, Liberty (8-0), on Friday night in Illinois. Saturday they will face Niagara (1-0), the first game ever between the Sooners and Purple Eagles. An early start on Sunday against defending ACHA Champions Delaware (0-1) should prove interesting. The Blue Hens have defeated the Sooners in previous meetings, in consecutive overtime Nationals matches.
OU is coming off a pair of wins over Texas A&M last weekend, 7-0 Friday night and 10-1 Saturday afternoon. Goaltender Colin Fernandes would shut out the weekend not allowing any goals. Louis Libin stepped in at the beginning of the second period and would finish up stopping 10 of 11 shots on goal. Troy Puente and Mico Solorzano would finish off the weekend with three goals each. Four other Sooners would end up with two goals for the weekend; Chad Liley, Mark Jackson, Darrell Boldon and Brandon Dennis scored a goal in each game.
The weekend saw a bit of roster change as well with the return of Joe Adams in the gray jersey. Adams spent most of last season in recovery from surgery but wasted no time getting back to business on Saturday. Adams would be tossed from the game in the second period after being charged with spearing then a 10 minute game misconduct.
When it was all said and done, Texas A&M goaltender Tony Girard would stop 87 out of 104 shots he faced.
As always, head over to Puckchk Photos to see more game pics!
I need to add, at the beginning of season, the team has been holding a silent auction. The auction will run through this weekend during the Oktoberfest hockey tournament.
