The last home game for the Oklahoma hockey team was way back on December 8th, when they hosted and defeated rival Central Oklahoma 5-0. After a Christmas break, the boys started playing again, but have been on the road. They even played a series in the Great White North. The Sooners had 10 games over the last 1/12 months, returning to Oklahoma with 3 wins and  7 losses. 4 of the losses were overtime/Shoot out losses however and their record doesn’t truly reflect how close the games were nor the level of play the Sooners performed. While in Canada, the Sooners lost to the University of British Columbia in a very equal, hard fought game. UBC plays at the level of the States NCAA D1. Oklahoma also traveled to Huntsville-Alabama to face that NCAA D1 team, netting 2 losses. (That game series was originally supposed to be a pair of home games against San Diego State, but the Aztecs had to cancel) The highlight of this long road trip had the #6 ranked Sooners defeat #1 Arizona State at home. ASU remains in first place and the Sooners bumped to fifth.

During the start of this new semester, the Sooners brought aboard some new faces to the team. Bryce Johnson transferred to OU from NCAA D1 Penn State in time to hit the ice with his new team in Huntsville. Johnson has put up 3 points, 2 goals & 1 assist in 5 games. Familiar face Nic Power (2G,2A) also rejoined the Sooners for the new semester after taking time off at the beginning of the year.

Oklahoma also signed on Ryan Stouffer from the St.Louis Bandits, also the former team of Ryan Zhender. Stouffer has 1G and 1 A in the two games he dressed for. All three have done a great job since coming on board. The team has proven itself as well, facing higher tiered schools, coming home with a respectful amount of points and moving up the ACHA rankings. Goaltender Colin Fernandes (2.55 GAA) solidified his position of number 1 tender. After buses breaking down, 6 hour waits in the middle of the desert and scorpions in the hotels, the Sooners are happy to be back on home ice. The Four Corners of North America tour was a great experience for all involved, but we are all ready for some “Boomer Sooner” at the BIC.

This weekends games will offer fans a good preview of the Colorado State ACHA DII team that will be joining the new WCHL league along with Oklahoma next season. The games will be available online and fans can watch on Cox Digital ch.124; uVerse in OKC/Tulsa  ch. 99 & on campus it’s available via ch. 76. ****The Oklahoma Hockey Booster Club is in the process of signing on interested individuals to help with booster activities for the team. A table will be set up 45 minutes before each of the two games this weekend to sign up for future volunteering and information. During Friday nights game, there will be a meeting for those interested during the first intermission in one of the party rooms. If you can’t make the games or want info now, email Dr. Scott Hammerstedt at swh@ou.edu. You can also visit the new Booster Club facebook page****
