The 6th ranked Oklahoma Sooners hosted #14 Iowa State on Saturday afternoon in front of a good sized crowd. Oklahoma returned to the ice after two huge wins against Colorado State the previous weekend. The Sooners however could not keep pace with the hungry and desperate for Nationals Cyclones, losing 4-1. The fast paced and hard hitting first period put Iowa State up 2-0, leaving OU thankful for the intermission. The break seemed to work in the Sooners favor, coming out strong and keeping up with the Cyclones in the second period. They would not get a goal in the second but managed to stop Iowa State from scoring any more points as well. The Cyclones went up 3-1 in the third before Chad Lilly broke the shut out, spoiling Iowa State’s Matt Cooper’s third shut out attempt in four starts! Iowa State got the empty netter at the end, finishing the Sooners off. OU had multiple great chances and put 31 shots on goal. Colin Fernandes stopped 25 for the Sooners.
Oklahoma plays their last home game of the season against in-state rival #16 Central Oklahoma this weekend. While Friday’s game is at UCO, it is just a little bit farther of a drive from home ice, so I will still say it’s the last two home games, respectively. The Sooners host UCO at the Blazers Ice Center at 4pm on Saturday for the official last home game of the season. Earlier this season before the Christmas break, OU defeated UCO in the two matches, 8-3 and 5-0.
