Fellow WCHL members Colorado State and Colorado visited Oklahoma this weekend. Both Colorado teams played game sets with both the Sooners and The University of Central Oklahoma but were sent back north without a win for either.

Thursday the Sooners defeated Colorado State in a fiery matchup 4-2. Mason Miller, Stan Smrke, Kale Erickson and Darrell Boldon scored for the Sooners. The Sooners came out of the locker room fired up and ready to play, most likely due to a guest appearance and locker room speech by Oklahoma country music star Toby Keith.

By the end of the night, OU fans were happy to see Toby at a hockey game since he is well known for being on the Sooners football sidelines during most home games. Keith took pictures with fans and even spent a brief time chatting with the broadcast team during the live game broadcast.

The Colorado State team enjoyed a bit of the visit as well and obliged the Sooner boys in a line brawl that started in front of the CSU bench with 1:48 left in the third period. Granted, it was a crosscheck that probably started it. This resulted in Disqualifications for CSU’s Nathan Strah and Jamison Wicks and a Disqualification for OU’s Steven Behm.

Friday and Saturday the University of Colorado came to the Blazers Ice Center after taking a 4-1 loss to Central Oklahoma the night before. OU added to the Buffalos misery by way of 8-0 and 9-2 wins.

Bryce Johnson and Kale Erickson each came close to earning hat tricks but would have to settle for 2 goals apiece on Friday. Matt Mckinney, Jordon Greenberg, Grant Williams and Stan Smrke would also net a goal in the shutout. OU’s Casey Wilfer got the start in net and would only face 9 shots in the game.

Saturday, Colorado did not fair any better, but by the end of the weekend, goaltender Alex Palumbo faced 102 shots. Even with 9 goals, no hat tricks for OU although Steven Behm came the closest. Lane Erickson played in his first game in an OU sweater and would end the game with a goal and an assist. Lane is the brother of Kale Erickson, who also got a goal in the game. Freshman Tyler Jones also got his first goal of the season for OU. Captain Alex Jacobs, Derek Tylka, Ryan Stouffer, and Joe Adams round out the scoring list for the Sooners. Louis Libin had the start Saturday and stopped 31 of 33 shots.
