For the first time in program history, the Oklahoma Sooner hockey team has made it the final four of the ACHA D1 National Tournament. The #2 Sooners defeated #10 Iowa State 3-1 in a very closely contested game. Down 1-0 through most of the contest, Jordon Greenberg finally put one past Cyclones goaltender Matt Cooper to tie the game. Derek Tylka got the assist on the goal by a great head-up play along the boards, staying with the puck and passing it to Jordon who was camped out in front of the net. Tylka had taken 3 straight penalties (roughing, unsportsmanlike, and slashing) in the first period, one resulting in the Cyclones goal. With under 5 minutes left in the game, Freshman Tyler Jones put the Sooners up 2-1. Less than 2 minutes later, Jones found the back of net yet again pushing the Sooners out to a 3-1 lead. Cooper stopped 42 Sooner chances. OU’s Nick Holmes stopped 28 Cyclone shots.
The Sooners will take on Robert Morris-Illinois at 7 CST. Monday night. Broadcasting again on fasthockey.com or follow @OUHockey, @achamensD1 on twitter. RMU defeated Central Oklahoma 6-0 to earn the honors of moving ahead in the tournament. RMU also defeated Oakland by way of a 6-0 score. The Eagles are a team that can get the goals needed. The way Nick Holmes has been playing for OU and the constant barrage by the Sooners could make this another exciting game to watch.
The ACHA re-seeds for the semifinals. The two remaining games are: #2 Oklahoma and #3 Robert Morris-Il; #1 Arizona State and #5 Stony Brook. Will we see a WCHL team final?
