With some harsh losses over the past couple weeks, the Sooners managed to get their skates going and keep the other team on the defense this weekend. Thursday and Sunday the Sooners hosted #6 Minot State and skated to two 5-3 victories.
Thursday night had OU fans fearing the worst yet again, when Minot State came to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Jordan Greenberg however got things going for the Sooners in the second period with a power play goal, Senate Patton tying the game up for OU in the third period. From there it was all Sooners. Bryce Johnson would net two goals within 17 seconds of each other, giving OU the 4-2 lead. Patton got the final goal of the game in the remaining minutes. OU’s Colin Fernandes recorded 14 saves in the game, Minot State’s Riley Hengen, 31.
The Sooners had Friday and Saturday off while Minot State headed up the road to take on #1 ranked UCO. The Beavers were again defeated in both games, Saturday’s match going to overtime.
The rest proved helpful for the Sooners, who had a 3-0 lead by the third period. The game was back and forth on the ice with both goaltenders making great saves for their teams. Ryan Stouffer first scored for the Sooners near the halfway mark in the first period. Bryce Johnson put the Sooners up 2-0 in the second, Mason Miller making it 3-0 by the third.
The Beavers came back in the third to tie the game up. Looking for their first win of a four day road trip in Oklahoma, they put OU on notice they came to play. Bryce Johnson was having none of it however and would score the game winning goal and the empty net goal, sealing the victory and a hat trick. Fernandes stopped 23 in the match; Hengen, 22.
The Sooners host Texas A&M (DII) on Halloween Night and again on Saturday Nov. 1st. ***Note that Saturday games will now be 2:30pm with the OKC Jr. Blazers now starting play. This will be the last time to see the team until Dec. 6th for the Bedlam matchup against UCO. After that game will be winter break.
