Another big weekend of WCHL hockey is complete. The Oklahoma Sooners went 2 for 3 on the weekend while Central Oklahoma went 1 for 3, both teams hosting Arizona and Arizona State.
Thursday, Oct. 13th:
#9 Oklahoma and #19 Arizona State: 3-1 (EN) Arizona State
Curious to see how the reformed ASU ACHA DI team was going to look on the ice, the Sundevils did not disappoint. The Sooners were on a 4 game win streak until ASU came to OKC. Olivier Roy was Oklahoma’s lone goal scorer in the loss. The game had low penalty minutes, as well as shot totals, a solid effort by both teams.
#5 Central Oklahoma and #15 Arizona: 2-1 Arizona win
An impressive upset in Edmond by Arizona as teams haven’t had much success against UCO at home so far this year. Wildcats’ Alex O’Dea scored the game’s first goal; the game-winning goal going to Robert Smythe, his first as a Wildcat. Taylor Herndon was the lone UCO scorer.
Friday, Oct. 14th:
Oklahoma and Arizona: 4-1 Oklahoma win
Oklahoma took it to Arizona, handing the Wildcats their first loss of the season. Although a quiet first period, the Sooners woke up with a Joe Vuolo goal in the second. In the third period, Mike Behm, Zach Pard, and Tanner Ulland all found the back of the net. Nick Zellmer put Arizona on the board in the third. The match was another that recorded low shots-on-goal counts by both teams.
Central Oklahoma and Arizona State: 7-4 Arizona State win
Alex Durbeniuk scored first for UCO in the first period but it was all Arizona State after that. Michael Cummings took over the game with a hat trick in the second period for ASU. Alexander Jmaeff also scored twice for UCO in the third period.
Saturday, Oct. 15th:
Oklahoma and Arizona: 6-4 Oklahoma win
More shots on goal tends to end with more pucks in the net. Five separate Sooners scored on Arizona in the win, Mike Behm earning the additional empty net goal in the final minute. Down 4-1 early in the third, the Wildcats roared back to life and very nearly tied the game, scoring three goals in the third. A great showing by an Arizona team that has very limited time together on the ice as a team this season.
Central Oklahoma and Arizona State: 3-2 UCO win
UCO went up 2-1 over ASU in the first, but the scoring and gameplay settled down nicely afterwards. The teams swapped goals in the second period and would remain to be the final score.
