This season marks the return of the World University Games, taking place in Almaty, Kazakhstan in late January, early February. This is always a fun time for players and fans in the ACHA, when they get to see some of their own in Olympic style competition. (I have a little breakdown of the games written here if you are curious to learn a bit more.)
While no player from the Oklahoma Sooners team received an invite, several WCHL conference players did, as well as Oklahoma City native, Taylor Herndon. Let’s take a look at them!
Jordan Gluck (G)-Arizona State
Michael Cummings (F)- Arizona State
Sean Murphy (F)- Arizona State
Alex Temby (D)- Colorado
Matt Anders (F)- Colorado
Taylor Herndon (F)- Central Oklahoma
Four of the players on this years invite list were also on the 2015 WUG Team USA roster, ASU’s Sean Murphy being the WCHL’s player. At the moment this is a preliminary “camp roster”, so names can change before the finalized roster. Here is a look:
The team will gather in Boston, December 26-29 at the Babson Skating Center and will take part in three exhibition games.
The first exhibition game will be against NCAA Division I College of the Holy Cross at the New England Sports Center on December 27 at 7 p.m. Games No. 2 and 3 will be played against an all-star team from the Eastern Hockey League (EHL) at Rodman Arena in Walpole, Mass. Game No.2 will take place on December 28 at 8:30 p.m. Game No. 3 will follow on December 29 at 2:30 p.m.
Team USA will be coached by Ohio’s Sean Hogan. Coach Hogan was the Assistant Coach for Team USA in 2013 and 2015. Illinois’ Nick Fabbrini and Lindenwood’s Rick Zombo are the Assistant Coaches this time around.
The World University Games will be available online through FISU.TV. They have in the past, been very great quality so definitely worth watching! A quick breakdown of Team USA’s schedule:
