Oklahoma Lacrosse is more than ready to start their 2017 season

What an off-season for the University of Oklahoma’s lacrosse team! After hosting the Nike Lacrosse camp for the first time this past summer, the team snatched up camp leader Mario Enea, and made him their new Head Coach. Enea comes to the Sooner state with over 20 years of experience coaching lacrosse and helping young players learn the game.

While last year had a relatively small schedule and only two home games, the 2017 more than makes up for it with 7 home games, not too mention big Lone Star Alliance conference matchups. The Sooners open their 2017 season hosting Nebraska on February 11th at 1pm at Timberdell Field. The Sooners welcome Arkansas, Kansas, Southern Methodist, North Texas, Ole Miss, and Texas Christian to Norman as well this season. You can take a look at the entire schedule here.

I had a chat with Junior Defenseman, Andrew Ousley, about the upcoming season and the excitement this year is bringing:

How did you and the team go about snagging Mario Enea?

During this past summer of 2016, Mario Enea organized and brought the Nike Lacrosse camp to the University of Oklahoma, and me and a few other players had the chance to assist him with the camp. During these few days, we were fortunate enough to get to know Coach Mario and got to talking about our coaching search and within the next few months, we hired him as our Head Coach. We are very fortunate to bring a guy like him into our program and start developing a top MCLA program.

(If you want to learn a bit more, I did a blog post about the camp.)

You guys have a nice schedule this season, are there any matchups in particular you are looking forward to?

With our 2017 schedule coming out, we are looking forward to our LSA North rival game against SMU as well as Texas State. These two games are circled on our schedule and we are excited to hit the ground running when we get back on campus. This year we add The University of Texas and LSU which are two other LSA contenders that are two very good programs.

What would you say to people in and around Oklahoma who have never watched a lax match or know about your team?

Being a local kid and growing up in Oklahoma City, the biggest thing that I would say to people from Oklahoma is that this is a awesome sport that is unlike any other and is just as physical as football if not more. We would love for anyone and everyone to come out and get involved in the sport of lacrosse and jump on board with the University of Oklahoma Lacrosse family.

How can people help support the team(financially)?

Anyone who is wanting to help out our team financially we would appreciate it greatly. If you click at the bottom of the page, it will allow you to donate to help out the team with travel expenses and many other needs of the team. Anything and everything is greatly appreciated and we would love the support!

As with the Sooners hockey team, the lacrosse boys also rely on donations, on top of players fees. Unlike the hockey program however, OU LAX does not benefit from admission or concession funds for traveling expenses. (All the more reason to pack a cooler and come down to watch these guys-it’s free!)

Their team store that is set up for merchandise sales has already ran its fundraiser for the year, so if you care to help out a fun and hardworking group of young men, you can donate to the team through the OU Foundation!

Get out and support your local clubs teams!
